Agricultural production has always been very sensitive to weather conditions, which cause billions of dollars in damage in the United States every year. Even though it is not possible to control the weather, it is possible to drastically decrease its impacts. In recent years, there has been a tremendous increase and improvement in climate data and forecasts, leading to the development of tools designed to help producers use this data to make better management decisions. The objective of this bulletin is to inform agricultural producers about weather-related risks to production and resources that are available to help manage these risks. It includes an overview of different climatic risks that can impact Virginia producers, general principles of risk management, and tools that can help put these principles into practice.
