Pesticide Applicator Training Manuals

The Virginia Tech Pesticide Programs website offers you information sources on pesticides, pesticide safety, pest management, educational opportunities, and related services.

This website includes information on certification and recertification for pesticide applicators, as well as resources for Extension agents and specialists. In addition, you will find a brief description of the pesticide applicator training manuals that prepare prospective applicators to take and pass state certification exams in 23 different categories. The manuals are listed numerically below:

Virginia Core Manual (456-210)

  • For exam preparation for commercial applicators, private applicators, and registered technicians in all categories.

1A Agricultural Plant Pest Control (456-214)

  • For commercial applicators using pesticides in the production of agricultural crops, on grasslands, and on noncrop agricultural land.

1B Agricultural Animal Pest Control (456-215)

  • For commercial applicators using pesticides on agricultural animals, and places on or in which such animals are confined.

1C Fumigation of Soil and Agricultural Products (456-212)

  • For commercial applicators using pesticides for soil fumigation in the production of agricultural commodities and/or fumigation of agricultural products.

1D Chemigation (456-213)

  • For commercial applicators applying pesticides through an irrigation system.

2 Forest Pest Control (456-216)

  • For commercial applicators using pesticides in forests, forest nurseries, and seed orchards.

3A Ornamental Pest Control (456-223)

  • For commercial applicators using pesticides to maintain ornamental plants in interiorscapes or landscapes.

3B Turf Pest Control (456-217)

  • For commercial applicators using pesticides to maintain ornamental turf in sites such as golf courses and parks.

  • For commercial applicators using pesticides to control vertebrate pests outside of human dwellings or other structures.

  • For commercial applicators using pesticides to control roots in sewer lines.

8 Public Health Pest Control (456-225)

  • For commercial applicators using pesticides to manage or control pests of medical significance that pose a risk to public health.

9 Regulatory Pest Control (456-226)

  • For federal, state, and local government employees using pesticides to control regulated pests.

10 Demonstration and Research Pest Control (456-227)

  • For commercial applicators who teach proper pesticide use, application techniques, and/or make pesticide recommendations; for research application of pesticides in greenhouses or field plots.

  • For commercial and private applicators applying pesticides from fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, including uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). 

12 Wood Preservation and Wood Products Treatment (456-228)
