There is interest in increasing sweetpotato production among farmers in Virginia. An on-farm survey of variety used and yield among sweetpotato growers in southeast Virginia indicates that yield varies greatly. However, irrigation appears to be an important factor in some areas to obtained yields comparable to other states. The two main commercial sweetpotato varieties (‘Beauregard’ and ‘Covington’) and recently released ones performed well in the variety trials and are recommended for production in Virginia. In contrast, many local consumers prefer the white variety ‘Hayman’, but alternative white flesh varieties with better yield and storage root quality are available for commercial production.
