About 34% of Virginians rent their homes and more than 500,000 of renters likely live in homes on private wells. Many people are surprised to learn that there is only a requirement to provide hot, running water to renters on a private well, with no requirements for routine testing, treatment or addressing water problems associated with health or nuisance impacts. This publication encourages renters to discuss water source, quality, problems and treatment prior to signing a lease and provides suggestions and resources for renters who need assistance.
