Manganese is a common geologic contaminant in Virginia groundwater and well water. Currently regulated as a nuisance contaminant, it has been added to the candidate list to be regulated in municipal water supplies under the Safe Drinking Water Act due to health concerns for certain populations. This publication provides an overview of manganese, why and at what concentrations it is a health or nuisance concern, and where in Virginia manganese is likely to be elevated.
